Millennials: Training Talent

State-Funded Program Connects Interns to Bioscience Careers

Colorado’s commitment to growing a strong bioscience workforce begins with training up-and-coming talent. A state-funded program focused on advancing the careers of next-generation innovators provides companies in the state’s designated Innovation Industries dollars to hire and train Millennial interns.

The program connects companies with up-and-coming talent and helps students translate their academic knowledge in real-world settings.

“The Innovative Industries Internship program opens new doors for students and companies. Interns get incredible exposure to the breakthrough work happening at bioscience companies here in Colorado, said April Giles, President and CEO of Colorado Bioscience Association. “The program also provides needed resources for our companies.”

Program stats:

  • 338 approved internship spots across Colorado’s Advanced Industries since program’s inception
  • 291 interns completed or currently enrolled in program
  • 179 participating business in various industries

The Innovative Industries Internship Program funding is available to businesses providing paid internships in eight industries critical to Colorado’s economic future including: Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace, Bioscience, Construction, Electronics, Engineering and Energy and Natural Resources, and Information Technology.

Established in 2015 when Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed House Bill 15-1230, the program provides the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment funding for 90 internships annually for five years, to distribute matching grants up to $5,000 per intern for on-the-job training at participating companies. Internships require a minimum of 130 on-the-job training hours and must be completed in less than six months.

“I liked that I received hands on experience in both my field of study and other fields (due to the small size of the company). The program allowed me to be exposed to all aspects of a biomedical company while receiving hourly wages. Internships like those are hard to come by when still in school, so I am grateful for this opportunity,” said an intern at a bioscience company.

Applications are open now for interns and participating companies. The application deadline is February 15, 2018.
