Weekly Policy Update: Action on Two Bills and Advocacy in DC

UNDER THE GOLD DOME

This week, HB18-1135: Extend Advanced Industry Export Acceleration Program passed the Colorado House of Representatives and next week it moves to the Senate. This bill extends the advanced industries export acceleration program to businesses looking to expand and grow their business in international markets. It is an important top proactive bill that CBSA supports for our members and the bioscience industry. If you would like to get involved to advocate for the program please contact Jennifer Jones. CBSA continues to advocate against House Bill 1260, Prescription Drug Price Transparency. The bill could stifle bioscience innovation in Colorado and harm patients. Unfortunately, this week the bill narrowly passed in the Colorado House of Representatives by a vote of 33-30 (2 excused). It quickly moved to the Senate and is assigned to the Senate Veteran & State Affairs Committee. While we were disappointed in the outcome in the House, we continue to advocate to Senate legislators ensuring they’re aware how this legislation jeopardizes Colorado’s thriving bioscience community. BIO FLY-IN

This week CBSA president and CEO April Giles joined CBSA Board Member, policy committee co-chair, Dan Wittenberg, and MenoGeniX founder, president and CEO, Debra Duke in Washington, D.C. as part of the BIO Fly In. This event brings bioscience representatives from across the country together for legislative briefings and advocacy. The trip is always a great opportunity to inform our CO Delegation about the exciting advancements in our industry and to advocate for their continued promotion of the success of our Colorado companies. While in in D.C., CBSA had the opportunity to present Congressman Mike Coffman, Congresswoman Diana DeGette, Senator Michael Bennet, and Senator Cory Gardner with the BIO 2018 Innovator in Biotechnology award. We thank these leaders and our entire delegation for their leadership, support and commitment to our industry.
